Categories of Fossil Free Zones

We created distinct Fossil Free Zone categories: to reflect the diversity, give clarity to different types of action, and acknowledge progress at every level.

Some zones may already be fully free from fossil fuels, while others are phasing them out step by step. We believe all of these efforts matter.

By naming and recognizing them, we support transparency, encourage ambition, and create momentum for all actors across regions and sectors.

1) Show it

  • Example: Share photos or videos of renewable systems and appliances within the zone that don't rely on fossil fuels. This could include installations such as air source heat pumps, wind power generators, solar technologies, induction stoves, electrified tools and more.
  • Importance: Whether it's showcasing innovative power solutions, efficient heating methods, or alternative energy sources, visual documentation serves as a powerful testament to the tangible impact of the documented zone's sustainability initiatives, inspiring others to adopt similar practices.

3) Add credibility

  • Example: Articles, reports, or speeches in the media discussing the end of fossil fuel activities in the zone, supported by relevant website links. This could include a city's commitment to renewable energy goals or a feature on a private homeowner's journey to a fossil free lifestyle.
  • Importance: External validations like these add credibility to the zone’s story, capturing attention and support from a wider audience.
